Three-time European king Inter Milan are set to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League after Edin Dzeko’s brace secured a 2-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. Dzeko broke the deadlock after an hour of frustration for Inter, who previously refused two goals and missed several other opportunities. His second in the 67th minute ensured there was no way back for Shakhtar, who hit the post late. Inter provisionally lead Group D with 10 points and will be confirmed in the round of 16 with one game to play if Real Madrid avoid defeat to Sheriff in the other group game of the day. “The day I signed my contract here, I said that was our goal,” said coach Simone Inzaghi, who took the reins at Inter in the offseason. Meanwhile, Ajax won Group C thanks to Sébastien Haller’s brace in the second half to a 2-1 victory at Besiktas, who led thanks to a penalty from Rachid Ghezzal in the first half. Haller, 27, has nine goals in five group stage games, tied with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the Champions League scorers’ charts this season. Dutch giants Ajax have a perfect 15-point record while Besiktas is out of Europe after five losses. Sporting host Borussia Dortmund in the other group game with each side at six points. with Reuters Australian Associated Press
