On September 20, the Teatro Real in Madrid will kick off the 2021-22 season with Rossini’s “La Cenerentola”.

The opera will be directed by Stefan Herheim and conducted by Riccardo Frizza.

In a statement, Frizza said: “Spain is the country where I live and which has given great meaning to my life as a musician. And this year, it was from Spain that I received a prize that fills me with pride: the Ópera XXI Prize, awarded by the Spanish Association of Opera Theaters and Festivals for the “Lucia di Lammermoor” that I I conducted in 2019 at ABAO Bilbao Opera… Until now, the vagaries of artistic programming have led me only once to conduct at the Teatro Real in Madrid. It was 2007 and I had the unique opportunity to direct both the Venice and Ferrara versions of “Tancredi”. It was an exciting experience, from a theatrical point of view because the staging of Kokkos was particularly relevant, from a musical point of view because of the great bond between the creative team and the two actors, and of a philological point of view thanks to the help received from the Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro with its precious score.

He added: “Fourteen years later, I am back at the Teatro Real, still with Rossini, to inaugurate the 2021-22 season with ‘La Cenerentola’. Again, I have a spectacular chorus and orchestra, two well-matched vocal cast and a lot of enthusiasm.

Frizza will be joined by a cast including Karine Deshayes as Angelina, Dmitry Korchak as Don Ramiro, Renato Girolami as Don Magnífico and Roberto Tagliavini as Alidoro. The second cast includes Michele Angelini, Borja Quiza, Nicola Alaimo and Riccardo Fassi.

“La Cenerentola” opens on September 23 and will run until October 9, 2021 with a total of 14 performances. The opening night performance will be broadcast by TVE via La2.
